The Malstrom is a synth, just like the SubTractor. It uses graintables to generate sounds. A graintable can be thought of as a sample cut into very little pieces called grains. Playing a note with Malstrom is nothing more than playing back this cut-to-pieces sample, over and over again.
Now a first way to control the way Malstrom sounds, lies in adjusting the way the graintable is played back. The controls to do this are found in the OSC A and OSC B sections of Malstrom:
- the motion knob controls how fast the grains are played back one after another
- the index slider controls at what grain playback starts
The spread knob controls the stereo image of the sound: the more the knob is turned open, the more the sounds coming from oscillators A and B will be panned seperately to left and right. When turned completely open, Osc A will be panned entirely to the left and Osc B to the right.
Envelope
Each oscillator has its own envelope section, which comes immediately after the oscillators in the chain. This is diffirent from SubTractor, where the envelope comes last, and applies to both oscillators together.
